Orthopedic Instruments

An osteotome is an instrument used for cutting or preparing bone during different types of surgery. Osteotomes are angled on both sides for better assistance in the surgeries. They are used today in plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery and dental implantation.
All bone is visco-elastic, and can be compressed. The osteotomes help in compression of the bone during surgery, and thus creating a better space for implant placement.

A bone curette is a spoon-shaped instrument, attached to a handle, that is used as a debulking instrument commonly in orthopedic procedures, and spinal procedures. It is used to scrape away and remove fibrous tissue and other debris from bone. It may also be used to scrape and remove small portions of the bone itself.
Volkmann bone curettes are also available as single or double-ended instruments, in various lengths, with multiple tip configurations.
The curettes may be sharp or blunt depending on the need of the physician.

During spine and orthopedic procedures, gouges are used to remove tissue and bone marrow from bone and discs and to prepare an area for bone grafting.

Bone Rongeurs are like pliers with a heavy, pointed jaw. They are used for gnawing holes in bones during surgery. This could be neurosurgery where the surgeon must remove part of the skull to expose the brain. It could be an orthopedic surgery or even a cadaver dissection.
The bone rongeurs can also be used for shaping the bone autograft from a patient’s body to a finer form so that it may be used in spinal and trauma surgeries.

An item designed for use in a wide variety of orthopedic and surgical procedures where rasping/sculpturing of bones is required. It is also used to assist the surgeon’s control while performing delicate shaping and contouring of the bone. Rasps allow for a firm grip on the instrument.

Hohmann Bone Levers, which is used during an orthopedic surgery for moving a bone aside or away, so that a surgeon can effectively treat his patient. This is done for vacating the operational area.

Bone Holding Forceps have the purpose of grasping and manipulating entire bones or bone fragments in order to reduce a fracture.
Bone Holding Forceps are commonly used to stabilize bones during repair. They may also be used to remove bone fragments from a surgical site.
In a trauma surgery, these forceps are used for holding a bone together so that a plate may be easily implanted to the patient.

Tendon Grasping Forceps are ideally suited for use in surgeries of the tendon. Procedures such as patellar tendon repair or a tendon graft in any other area of the body. These are general instruments used in arthroscopic surgeries.

Meniscal knives are great tools for dealing with meniscal tears or soft-tissue resection. These precision-crafted knives are “must-have” items.
This knife is used for cutting the meniscus generally when the meniscus gets stuck on the tibial surface due to pressure and folding of the meniscus.

Bone Cutting Forceps are double spring, single action forceps that feature forward or backward angled blades and are commonly used for cutting small bones. For work on larger bones, one might use the Bone Cutting Forceps, which have a similar blade; however, utilize a double action mechanism for greater ability to cut large bones.
These may also be used for re-shaping the bone for proper fixation of a fracture.

Wire cutting pliers are a tool used to grasp wire firmly and cut. They may be used for bending or to apply physical compression before cutting. This instrument is dual purpose as it helps in both wire bending as well as cutting.

In general, pliers are made of a pair of metal first-class levers that is joined to a fulcrum; this creates short jaws on one end, and longer handles to the other side.

Plaster Spreader is used to aid in the removal of plaster casts. Once a cut is made in the plaster cast, the blades of the spreader are closed by opening the handle and are inserted to a section of the cast. By squeezing the handle, the blades spread open, there by spreading apart sections of the cast. After multiple sections of the cast are spread out, the cast may be removed.

Cast Breaker is used for breaking apart plaster casts. It is a single spring, plier instrument with jaws the same length as the shanks. The jaws are slightly curved and have deep horizontal serrations half the length the jaws to assist in the breaking of the cast.

Plaster Shears are large 2 handed shears used to remove heavy or large plaster casts. They have round handles to facilitate ease in the cast removal.

Types available: Stille

These saws are used for efficient cutting of the bandages without harming the patient. Convenient to use, these saws are fabricated using premium grade raw materials and modern technology tools that ensure their strength and optimum quality. These are also used to cut bigger plastic bandages. With 1 – ¾” and 2 ½” blade sizes, these saws move in circular frames.

Plaster Saw is used for cutting plasters. This can be particularly useful in cutting through casts that have been set for setting bones, and assisting in fracture repair. A variety of orthopedic surgical procedures require the placement of a plaster cast to set the bones in the proper orientation while the healing process takes place. The saw is crafted from stainless steel and is specifically designed to effectively cut through the cast material, while maintaining its sharpness.

Plaster Knife is a slightly curved blade used for removing and cutting the plaster casts.

Knife is used for amputations. It has a curved shape to assist in typical amputations

Bone surgical chisels designed to excise bone during orthopedic surgical procedures. These chisels typically consist of a sturdy handheld, manual instrument including a wide (more than one inch is typical) straight or slightly curved flat blade with an angled cutting edge and a handle. Orthopedic surgical chisels, and neurosurgery chisels are used in many orthopedic procedures for carving of the bone, and reaching the affected part for treatment or surgery.

The periosteum is a dense tissue found on the surface of bones other than joints.
Periosteal elevators are mainly used to lift full thickness periosteum flaps during orthopedic trauma surgeries. The tips of the periosteum elevator need to be sharp otherwise shredding of the periosteal flap can occur.

Bone Tamper is an orthopedic instrument commonly used in bone grafting procedures. The tamper is used to assist in packing autologous, cadaveric, or synthetic grafting material into the necessary spaces to facilitate new bone growth.

Types available: Casper, Passow, Bone Tamper Fibre Handle.

Mallet is an orthopedic instrument used in conjuction with osteotomes, chisels and gouges to apply a swinging force when cutting or shaping bone.

Types available: Williger, Doyen, Collin, Cottle, Ombredanne, Mead, Partsch,  Lucae, Hajek, Gerzog, Bergmann, Wagner.

Lead Hand is for use in orthopedic surgical procedures when secure positioning of the hand or fingers is necessary. The maleable material may be manipulated to fit the contours of the hand and secure various fingers and the wrist with thinner, maleable lead strips that are attached to the form itself. The lead hand is available in adult and child size.

Types available: Lead Hand (Children, Adults).

Orthopedic tendon strippers are used during orthopedic procedures to resize tendons by stripping or dissecting them. The Bunnel type tendon stripper can remove all five types of tendons in orthopedic as well as the arthroscpic surgery of the knee.

Types available: Bunnel, Tendon Stripper malleable.

Wire and pin cutters are medical tools. It is used to cut wire and pins that are implanted during an orthopedic surgery to fix defect and injuries of the eye. The jaws of wire and pin cutters are sharp and the handles are designed as such to provide a better grasp and to enable absorption of the shock when cutting.
